Artist's Notes
It has been a pleasure to record these songs that I have written over the last 10 years and to be able to share them with you. I began recording during the summer of 2002. In November of that year, I found out that I had breast cancer and began treatments for the next 6 months.
With the knowledge, support and prayers of a great many people, I'm fortunate to say that I am doing very well. I was able to continue recording this past summer. Several of these songs came out of my healing experience. It is my hope that they will speak to you and help you to walk your own healing path.
I'd like to thank the many people who have helped me through this journey, specifically those who have helped me with this CD. Musical mentors include John Two-Hawks, Peggy Hill, Ashley Two-Hawks and Buddy, the good luck dog, of Circle Studios. Thank you, John and Peggy, for all your guidance.
I'd also like to thank Greg Salerno, master guitarist, for his contribution to my music. Many thanks also go to Janice Yoes, professor of voice and the expressive heart, and to Henry Runkles, pianist and teacher, for their inspiration over the last 8 years. Thanks to my poetry mentor and dear friend Pamela Porter.
Also I'd like to thank Don House, Cedar Carrier, Daniel Coston and Liz Lester for their art and design talents.
Great thanks to my doctors and counselors: Dr. Suzanne Klimberg and Dr. Laura Hutchins of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (and all the kind people there); Audrey Eichenlaub, Marvin Shipman, Joy Caffrey, Dr. Julia Rader, Janis Gherman, Lama Kunga Rimpoche and friends at St. Paul's Episcopal Healing Service.
Thanks to all my friends who have supported me; to my students who inspire me to keep my heart open; to my family with great love (especially to my nephew Raley) and to Marshall, Daisy, Angel and Aerial for every day. May suffering be pacified and joy flourish.
This album is dedicated to my mom Mary Trimble Maier and to the memory of my father John Lewis Maier, Jr.

Words
A nest of cardinals in the geranium,
a song inside my heart.
A cool morning in summer,
time to make a start.
Whatever I've been dreaming
let it come alive today.
Whatever I've been humming,
let me say:
Hello, good morning, I love you.
Sleep well, sweet dreams, blessed be.
Words are poems and healings.
They bring sweet life to me.
The dogs play beside me,
the sunlight takes a spin.
A little breakfast, some English tea,
and it all begins.
The music on my piano says,
honey, let it be,
and all I want to do is see.
Hello, good morning, I love you.
Sleep well, sweet dreams, blessed be.
Words are poems and healings,
allowing ourselves to see.
A nest of cardinals in the geranium,
a song inside my heart.
A cool morning in summer,
time to make a start.
Whatever I've been dreaming,
let it come alive today.
Whatever I've been humming
let me say:
When he was dying, he said
could you move my bed to the window,
so all I want to do is see.
Hello, good morning, I love you.
Sleep well, sweet dreams, blessed be.
Words are poems and healings,
allowing ourselves to see.

Do You Believe in Angels?
It was the Fletchers from Pea Ridge
who stopped to rescue me.
I was bobbing along the interstate
like a seagull on the sea
when he said, you need some help, ma'am?
and I said, I sure do.
It was something like a miracle
on a Wednesday afternoon.
We headed to the next town
to buy a gas can.
He filled it up for me and said,
that should do you ma'am.
They got me on my way
like parents at a bus stop
and I had to wonder
if I'd stop for them or not.
Chorus:
Do you believe in angels
dressed like Arkansas farmers?
Do you believe we can be kind
and take a little longer
to help each other make it
and get where we're going,
to talk about the guitar
and have a few good moments.
Taking their time
on a Wednesday afternoon,
they stopped to help a woman
no matter what they had to do.
Where are we all going
so fast we don't know?
Do we pass each other up
as we push our lives on go?
Chorus
Repeat first verse and chorus

Love Again
This morning I awoke
to geese flying southward,
and, like the geese,
I dreamed that I could fly.
So I sing whenever
I'm feeling earthbound,
and I'll sing
until the day I die.
Chorus:
Love again tho' time
is against you.
Love again tho' time
be on your side.
Love again if you're
feeling earthbound.
Love again to soar
with wings on high.
Some days it seems like
nothing is helping.
Friends no longer
know their way to your door.
You can sing whenever
you're feeling earthbound
to find a peace
that sets you free
once more.
Chorus
The sky was made
for folks like you and me.
To help us when we're
feeling low.
So look up and sing
when you're feeling earthbound.
Turn your eyes up
and your heart will surely go.

A Day at Lee Creek
Chorus:
The creek runs by
and we step in,
never the same,
the same again.
The creek runs by
and we step in,
never the same again.
One runs from a love that's gone,
one runs to make a home.
One just wants to see birds fly,
one wants to say goodbye.
Chorus
It will take you far away
or turn you loose to be the day.
It doesn't matter where you turn;
it is here and we can learn.
Chorus
The water rolls by
like a dream.
What it is, is what it means.
The sound is what we came to feel;
the sound, oh, it can heal.
Chorus
No beginning and no end,
can you share that with a friend?
The water holds us up like hope.
Can we be each others boat?
Chorus
In this quiet, love builds a home.
Grief is joy, no more alone.
In this place birds come to see,
we are blessed to be free.
This Time of Year
Yesterday, a breath of spring was in the air.
It's been a long winter, so much frost and snow.
There are those who have so much despair
then why am I sitting at this table with you here?
What have I done to deserve this time of year?
Breakfast with my sweet William is a dream.
There are no children, I dont know what it means.
But the sun follows my face like a song.
I knew this day would come my way for so long.
What have I done to deserve this time of year?
Each of us will make what she will make.
My music is a place I go to where I can create.
A woman's happiness is what I find.
I pray I wake each day with this simple prayer in mind:
What have I done to deserve this time of year?
Spring is here and all that I can see
is the heart of hearts staring back at me.
It must be like this to be so alive
when through the winter all we did was survive.
What have we done to deserve this time of year?
Yesterday, a breath of spring was in the air.
Its been a long winter, so much frost and snow.
There are those who have so much despair
then why am I sitting at this table with you here?
What have I done to deserve this time of year?

Blue Lake of My Dreams
Blue lake of my dreams,
I'll be there in the spring.
Snow melts like a heart
that will survive.
Over rocks and crevices
we climb up from the plain.
The air is clear
and we are free again.
Chorus:
Coyote shows us where to go:
up past the rocks,
up past the snow,
where the wildflowers bloom,
delicate, yet strong,
they have room.
Blue lake of my dreams,
when I stand on your shore,
I feel I've been here before.
Blue lake of my dreams,
oh, you let me sing.
Without words,
light pours through the door.
Chorus
Blue lake of my dreams,
I don't know what you mean.
Your waves say
hello and goodbye.
Someone's always leaving,
someone's always coming home.
And some things you feel
you've always known.
Chorus
Repeat first verse

For Charlie
The schools say
they have a time
with Charlie
whenever he's in a room
it's always a party.
I say the schools
have too much gloom.
Maybe the schools need
a little more Charlie.
Chorus:
Play your guitar
from your heart.
Play your guitar
from your heart.
I've learned a lot
from my students.
Some things
I've yet to know.
Some people want
to control life.
Others know how
to let things go.
Play your guitar
from your heart.
Play your guitar
from your heart.
Don't let this world
try to stop you and start.
Play your guitar
from your heart.
We all know
a kid like Charlie
a spirit that has to fly.
So if he doesn't fit
into your picture,
think of a rainbow
across the sky.
Chorus
Repeat first verse
and chorus

Hair/No Hair
Did you shave your head?
Are you a nun?
Are you from Africa?
Or have you just begun
to feel what it's like
to be without your hair
in a culture that says hair,
that says hair?
Chorus:
Oh, woman, did you climb
a mountain,
taste the air up there?
Oh, woman, did you feel your
heartache?
Do you know how much
we care?
Wear a hat or not.
Set the style then.
Hair is but another jewel.
And if a child points
and asks her mother why,
know she's just a child,
she's not being cruel.
Chorus
And if your mother says
you look just like you did as a baby,
say, I was born again.
And if they don't understand
your religion brand, say,
I've circled the universe,
take my hand.
Chorus
Repeat first verse and chorus
This song is dedicated to all cancer patients.

The Buffalo River
Chorus:
The river takes me down
to places I have known.
The river takes me down
unto my home.
The river takes me down
with people I have known.
The river takes me down
unto my home.
Like the heron, I will fly
over water into wood.
Like the turtle, I will swim
under water into wood.
Chorus
Like the bluff, I will stand
through the ages of man.
Like the willows, I will bend:
in my beginning is my end.
Chorus
Love is like a river flowing-
steals your breath
and keeps on going.
Will I win or will I lose?
The question doesn't matter to a fool.
Chorus

But Love Remains
If we can't love each other,
then let me be
the one who loves
more deliberately.
If we can't love each other
on a cold, rainy day.
Let me be the one
who loves you
more than I can say.
Chorus:
'Cause it's cold out
and the fire is burning.
It's cold out
and my heart is turning.
It's cold out
and life is learning.
It's cold out-
this too shall pass
but love remains.
I've cried more over not giving love
than I have over giving all.
It haunts you like a bad dream
until you finally fall.
A man has left me crying
and smiling in my bed.
But the love I give
is but an inkling
of the love that's in my head.
Chorus
The angels want to bless us
take us in their loving care.
We're so busy leaving,
we don't quite know where.
My love is a fortress
I build in the air.
It goes on without me
to protect the ones out there.
Chorus
Repeat first verse and chorus

Sunflower Woman
The lines in your face form a spiral
from the past to the future into now.
I see in your eyes every hour.
Oh, woman, you are a flower.
Sunflower woman, take my hand.
Lead me to the place where I am healed.
Show me your heartache and your kindness.
Let me hear the colors of your dreams.
Someday I hope to be like you then,
to inspire her with my eyes.
I hope she sees all the heartache,
all the loving, all the smiles.
Sunflower woman, we are led
to the place where we are healed,
revealing our heartache
and all the kindness that we feel.
Singing the echoes of every little dream . . .
coloring the rainbows we've seen . . .
Each of your creations is a flower,
opening up every hour.
Thank you for the time that's come my way here,
thank you for this garden day.
Sunflower woman, take my hand.
Lead me to the place where I am healed.
Show me your heartache and your kindness.
Let me hear the echoes of your dreams . . .
and all the rainbows you've seen . . .
and all the sunlight we've been . . .

Eagle Dance
Chorus:
Dip and glide,
oh, so high,
the eagles fly.
Dip and glide,
oh, so high,
the eagles fly.
When we fight
our feathers fall.
When it's night
you hear us call.
Chorus
Find a tree
with just a branch.
We'll be there
on a dance.
Chorus
Around the lake
we travel long.
You
can be strong.
Chorus

Even When We Stumble
Even when we stumble,
even when we fall,
there's a moment going on
when something seems to call
where sunlight pours in
like nothing, nothing at all
even when we stumble,
even when we fall.
If what I said
wasn't right,
it must have been
the stars that night,
and somehow later
it all seemed right
or maybe wrong or maybe
just a little song.
In my heart
it was good,
there's no other way
that it could be
silly like a dream
goes round and round.
Another day, I walk these hills
and let their wisdom fill
my heart once again
till I am still.
Even when we stumble,
even when we fall,
even then there's light around it all.
Even when we stumble,
even when we fall,
even then there's light around it all.
The air is clear,
I feel the breeze,
I laugh inside
for what could be.
It doesn't matter
what we see or do not see.
If smiling is the way to begin,
then kindness is the way to end.
It doesn't matter
what we see or do not see.
Even when we stumble,
even when we fall,
even then there's light around it all.
Even when we stumble,
even when we fall,
even then there's light around it all.

The Gift of Now
Do you put off being happy? Do you put off
being sad?
Do you ignore your feelings, be they feelings
good or bad?
Do you love the evening as much as you love
the morn?
Do you love what's put together
more than you love what's torn?
Chorus:
Don't put off your joy. Don't postpone your sorrow.
It may be too late if we wait until tomorrow.
Now is what we have, what we have is today,
so take this moment to celebrate.
Do you love the child with an answer
as much as the man with no voice?
Do you hear the song inside a tear
as much as the song in rejoice?
This is what makes us human, makes us each
who we are.
Inside it writes a story, no matter the heart.
Don't put off your joy. Don't postpone your sorrow.
It may be too late if we wait until tomorrow.
Now is what we have, what we have is today,
so take this moment to celebrate.
Repeat first verse and chorus
